Abortion Pill

Before taking the Abortion Pill (aka: RU-486), you should understand what it is, what it could mean to your health, and how it works.  Give us a call and one of our staff will be happy to discuss it with you, verify if you’re pregnant, and inform you on all your options.

What is it?

RU-486, also known as “the abortion pill,” is actually a combination of two drugs — mifepristone and misoprostol — that cause early abortion.  It should not be used if it has been more than 70 days since your last period.  It is NOT the same as the “morning-after pill.”

How does it work?

Mifipristone is given on the first visit.  This drug stops a woman’s womb from being able to absorb progesterone and causes the lining of the uterus to begin breaking down.  The second medication, misoprostol, is taken at home up to 2 days later.  This causes cramping and bleeding that empties the uterus. This process is typically complete in 24-48 hours.

One to two weeks later, a follow-up exam should be done. This visit is very important to confirm by clinical examination or ultrasound that a complete termination of of the pregnancy has occurred.

Things to consider

  • A medication abortion requires two visits to a health care provider.
  • Most medical abortions using mifepristone are completed within 2 weeks, but some can take up to 3 or even 4 weeks.
  • Side effects include heavy bleeding, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and a mild fever.
  • If this method fails, a surgical abortion will be required.
  • If you have taken the first pill and changed your mind, you may be eligible for an abortion pill reversal.  Please call us right away for more information.
