The Abortion Pill, aka: RU-486, Mifepristone & Misoprostol
When?
FDA approved up to 10 weeks after last menstrual period (LMP) 1
How does it work?
The pill consists of two separate drugs: Mifepristone and Misoprostol. The first causes the death of the embryo by inhibiting the progesterone needed to sustain a pregnancy. The second drug causes the uterus to contract and expel the baby and placenta. In-between the first and second pill, an abortion pill reversal can take place. 2
Suction / Aspiration
When?
Up to 14 weeks LMP
How does it work?
A surgical procedure involving opening the cervix to place a tube in the uterus. Then using a suction device, suctioning the embryo’s body apart and out through the tube. Local anesthesia is typically offered. 3
Dilation & Evacuation (D&E)
When?
About 15 weeks LMP & up
How does it work?
A surgical procedure involving opening the cervix to allow forceps in to grasp and remove fetal parts. A suction device will also be used to remove all remaining parts. Local anesthesia, pain medications, and sedatives are used for this procedure. 4
D&E After Viability
When?
23 weeks LMP & up
How does it work?
This surgical procedure uses the same technique as the D&E. To avoid birth of the fetus, drugs will likely be administered into the amniotic fluid or fetal head or heart to stop the heart before the procedure. General anesthesia or intravenous sedation are often used. 5,6
Labor Induction
When?
2nd & 3rd Trimester
How does it work?
During this procedure, drugs may be injected into the fetus’ head or heart or amniotic fluid to avoid delivery of a live baby. The cervix is then softened and drugs administered to induce labor. Pain medication is often given orally or intravenously. 7
