College.
Everyone says it’s the best time of life…a time of self-discovery, independence, freedom, and of course…fun!
But, sometimes all of that “freedom” and “self-discovery” and ”fun” can be taken too far. Grades slip, things get out of hand, parties get carried away, and things happen.
College students have a proportionately higher rate of:
-Contracting STDs
-Risky sexual behavior
-Out of wedlock pregnancies
-Abortions
-Binge drinking
-Date rape
-Sexual assault
And…the top 3 leading causes of death in college-aged individuals are:
- Unintentional injury
- Homicide
- Suicide (CDC, 2010)
So what does this mean?
College can be great, but having a good and safe experience lies largely in how responsible you are with your self-discovery, freedom, and fun.
Here are some practical tips on having the best college experience possible!
Join a Club/Group –Make Connections
It’s always good to get involved to start networking and building friendships. Having a solid group for support and a place to belong will help with the college transition. There are clubs that have to do with your area of study, hobbies, your religion, there are intramurals, study groups, club sports, the list goes on and on. Find something you’re interested in, or something you have always wondered about, and check it out!
Never go out alone at night
Whether it’s on your way to the local bars or to a party, evening study session, or just going for a late night run, never go alone! Unfortunately, there are people out there that don’t have good intentions and the buddy-system can help protect you from “creepers” out there during the late hours. Even during the day, be aware of your surroundings and follow your instincts if something doesn’t feel right. If you have to go it solo for a late night walk, call the Campus Police for an escort home, or check out one of the many apps that are designed to help keep you safe in that very situation!
Know your limits
When it comes to drinking alcohol or having sex (the “typical” college things), it is important to know what YOU can handle and what YOU are ready for. Actions have consequences, so really take the time to think about what is best for you and your heart.
Consider legal and health ramifications of your actions when it comes to drinking.
Consider your risk of STD exposure, birth control effects, potential pregnancy, and your values and emotions when it comes to sexual activity.
These are no small matters and can affect you for years to come, so give yourself the time you deserve to think about what is best for you and your health!
Know your resources!
Finally, know what help is available to you. There are tons of great programs at colleges as well as local agencies and non-profits that are dedicated to serving you! Do some research and find out all the help that is available to you when times are tough!
